Personal Evaluation

Within the peer assessment i was asked to create a personal evaluation which includes:
  • evaluating my success anf contribution to the whole project.
  • discussing if personally i met the projects learning outcomes.
  • what i did well.
  • iwhat i could have done better.
  • what i learnt from the process
  • what i would do differently next time.

Personal Evaluation

My role within the group was to implement a design framework for the final poster. When we were allocating different roles for each of the group members I straight away opted to do the design aspect of it, rather then waiting to be assigned a random role. This is because I enjoy creativity and designing in general.

My main success within this area was giving our poster a strong foundation with a simple, concise and eye-retaining design. But in order to get this I had to carry out a number of tasks:
Design an initial idea myself.
Correspond constantly with team members when a draft design idea is produced.
Use feedback to create further improved designs.
Make varied versions of the design in terms of colour, layout, images and such like.

My duty was quite important (as were all of the other roles) because starting off a project always requires in-depth thinking, and the most thinking is contributed at the beginning, where ideas are exchanged and a design or proposal has been defined. Ultimately if the base proposal or design is not paramount then this may cause the final output restricted from being its full potential.

Within the design I also stated each heading that we needed to talk about. This is also essential as the information placed on the poster has to be concise and totally relevant. Also on a poster you can have significant amount of information, but my job was to only have the most important bits. This was difficult as I had to condense and pick out from a lot of information (researched information and own ideas).

I feel I had personally fulfilled our groups aim and objectives, however only to a certain extent. One of the aims was to make the poster as simple, easy to read and attractive as possible. This was achieved but it is natural that all projects have room for improvement. Maybe more images could have been added, and the text could have been reduced. We did decide near the beginning that the poster will need to be self explanatory as possible via images.

My corresponding and interpersonal skills were effective. As soon as I met my group members I quickly made friends to a personally level and retrieved both their emails and mobile numbers. From there I tried to keep in touch as much as possible, be it about the work or just in general. It is obvious that friends work better as a group then a group of acquaintances.

We all knew that on the day of the poster show we will be probed, questioned and criticised on our poster. We had an unstructured group discussion about this, and decided that the only way to get around it was to make sure that all the group members had substantial knowledge about the system. So if any person asked about it or criticised it then any group member could explain it in detail or defend it. This is exactly what we did at the poster show and it was a huge success and a benefit to our presentation.

One of the other aspects of the group project that I feel I did well, was the learning and grasping of new aspects. As I had explained above about all the group members having sufficient knowledge about the system, for me it was my ability to learn fast that helped me do this. For example, Keren (who is in our group) came up with the idea about WiMAX technology. He explained it was a more powerful version of Wi-fi, and was used to give strong wireless internet signals to all mobile devices around a large area, constantly. This is only a brief description, but he had given a more detailed one. The idea was quite new to me, as there were so many diverse fields within WiMAX to learn. As soon as he had announced this, I went home and did a bit of research and increased my knowledge further. This also helped me to grasp the idea. A personal benefit for me at the poster show, causing me to be just as knowledgeable about the subject as others were, and being able to explain it thoroughly to any onlookers.

Though I did the designing role of the project, I feel I could have also upheld the leadership role. If this would have been the case then maybe I could have guided the group to be more successful. Sometimes I can be a perfectionist and because of this it would have helped the group all round.

From this process I learnt a few valuable things. One of which, is the importance of teamwork and how only a group is stronger working compatibly together instead of broken down individuals. I also learnt that group work is an opportunity to make new friends from different backgrounds and having the ability to broaden ones horizon. Due to this I prefer working in a group oppose to on my own (although of course I can effectively work on my own aswell).
